Spotlight area
Surrounded by farmers’ fields and woodlands that roll away to the horizon in every direction, Ockbrook’s redbrick houses, beautifully manicured gardens and warm sense of community give it a cosy atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
Just five miles east of Derby, Ockbrook feels like it’s deep in the countryside and shrouded in the mists of time. Archaeologists believe there has been a settlement here for 12,000 years, with evidence to show that the village’s life has spanned Mesozoic prehistory, the Iron Age, Roman farmers, Saxon chieftains, Danish Vikings, the Normans and more. Steeped in history, it is a delightful place to live in the 21st century, with plenty of traditional properties that hark to the past, and numerous modern ones offering comfort, convenience and beautiful views of the Derbyshire countryside while remaining sympathetic to the brick cottage look that makes this village unique.
What are the locale amenities like?
With a service station, news agents and hairdressers in the village, Ockbrook has the basic amenities covered. Just a mile to the south, Borrowash has a high street with a butcher, baker and an excellent fishmonger, and two miles east you’ll find the Derby suburb of Spondon with its supermarkets, DIY centres and a wider range of shops and restaurants. Ockbrook School is one of the best independent schools in the country, and the village also has a good primary school. There’s a kennel, a cattery, two parks and a cricket club. Four traditional pubs serve Ockbrook’s thriving community, each with its own fascinating history and unique menu. Sitting less than a mile from the A54, Ockbrook provides easy access to Derby, Nottingham and the M1.
What are the area highlights?
The ancient trees and hedgerows, stunning landscapes and charming brick houses are what give Ockbrook its special charm. The Moravian church and settlement, built in grand Georgian style in the 1750s, are Grade II listed village landmarks. The church remains a Moravian chapel, while the other buildings are now part of Ockbrook School. The Apple Tree tearoom and giftshop is famous in the village for its teas and cakes. Age-old alleyways and ‘gitties’ criss-cross Ockbrook between the houses, leading to footpaths connecting other nearby villages – perfect for anyone wanting to explore this quiet setting. Derby Golf Centre is close by in Borrowash, and other local highlights include Elvaston Castle Country Park, Locko Park, Erewash Valley Cycle Trail, Shipley Hall and all kinds of activities and attractions along the Derwent and Trent rivers.
