Elvaston, Derbyshire

Spotlight area

With the banks of the River Derwent just to the north, Elvaston is a tiny village in a calm and peaceful setting. Offering desirable properties in a whole range of styles, it’s a much sought-after location thanks to its proximity to Derby’s commercial hub.

Picturesque Elvaston takes in the hamlets of Ambaston and Thulston, and although the community is only half a mile from the fringes of Derby the village offers an idyllic rural setting. With footpaths, hedgerows and bubbling brooks criss-crossing the local fields, these environs are the perfect escape from the rat race – a place to relax and contemplate nature. Many of the homes are generously proportioned and range from modernist bespoke designs through to cosy bungalows and traditional agricultural cottages with original features and warm hearthplaces. Life can be lived at a slower pace here, in a village that dates back more than a millennium.

What are the locale amenities like?

Elvaston, Ambaston and Thulston are just a few minutes by car from the Alvaston and Boulton areas of Derby, where you’ll find a full range of local amenities including supermarkets, sports clubs, hairdressers, doctors’ surgeries and schools. Meanwhile, Derby city centre offers a rich variety of cultural activities from fantastic bars and restaurants to cinemas, the theatre, art galleries and the excitement of matchday at Derby County Football Club. There are good road links to Nottingham and Birmingham, while Derby’s train station provides residents with easy connections to London, Sheffield, Leeds and the North West.

What are the area highlights?

Famous for its peace and quiet, Elvaston is ideal for anyone who enjoys country pursuits. Its main landmark is Elvaston Castle, a grand country house dating back to 1633, which was restored in gothic revival style by James Wyatt in the 1820s. The beautiful grounds are open during the summer for walking, cycling and horseback riding, with woods, wildflower meadows and the gardens free to explore. The Harrington Arms in Thulston is the local pub, offering highly rated food and a focal point for the community, while Beechwood Park Fishery is an angler’s dream. Every June, the Derbyshire Country Show takes place in Elvaston
